We have found that weight gain appears to be a commonly experienced adverse effect of AD treatment. In particular, patients who seek outpatient alcoholism treatment weigh more than patients who are receiving AD treatment in the community (40 vs. 34 kg). Although many patients attempt to lose weight during treatment, the nature of their weight gain is not well understood, in part because weight patterns during treatment are not systematically assessed. There are two important reasons for this lack of attention to weight change. First, the relationship between weight change and treatment-related effects is not easy to establish. Many variables, such as comorbidity, the rate of change in caloric intake, and the underlying severity of the disorder itself, could affect the weight pattern of an individual. Therefore, some degree of personalization is required. Second, the assessment of weight change would seem to be more problematic in the treatment setting, where subjects are often distracted by the presence of other patients, difficulties in completing questionnaires, and scheduling constraints. Because many hospitals and clinics are beginning to offer outpatient or detoxification services, it is important to determine if a weight-management intervention is indeed effective for patients with AD. Therefore, the goals of this investigation are to develop and test a weight-management intervention for patients with AD, and to provide information that will guide the development of future weight-management interventions that are effective for the treatment of AD. A total of 20 alcoholic patients will be placed into one of two groups: an experimental group, that will receive the weight-management intervention; and a control group, that will receive treatment as usual. All subjects will be assessed every week for four weeks. However, only 12 patients in the experimental group will be measured at every week, to maintain a minimum of 4 weeks between their final and first assessments. The experimental
